THE JANUARY EXPERIMENT - STILL FROM FILM

THIS SHORT FILM SHOWS THE EXPERIMENT 'EXPLODING WATER' CARRIED OUT FOUR TIMES. EACH TIME THE EXPERIMENT REPRESENTS A DIFFERENT WEEK OF THE MONTH OF JANUARY. THE VARIABLES OF THE EXPERIMENT ARE THE AMOUNT OF EFFERVESCENT VITAMIN C TABLETS USED AND THE ACIDITY OF THE WATER USED. THESE VARIABLES ARE ADJUSTED EACH TIME THE EXPERIMENT IS CARRIED OUT TO CORRESPOND TO ELEMENTS OF THE AVERAGE WEEKLY DATA COLLECTED ON THE DAILY QUANTIFICATION RECORDS.

WEEK 01 AVERAGE DAILY NUMBER OF GASEOUS EMISSIONS = 12.9 = 0.65 TABLETS
POPULARITY VARIABLE = 9.03 = 6 DROPS OF VINEGAR

WEEK 02 AVERAGE DAILY NUMBER OF GASEOUS EMISSIONS = 28.9 = 1.45 TABLETS
POPULARITY VARIABLE = 9.73 = 5 DROPS OF VINEGAR

WEEK 03 AVERAGE DAILY NUMBER OF GASEOUS EMISSIONS = 19.3 = 0.95 TABLETS
POPULARITY VARIABLE = 7.38 = 8 DROPS OF VINEGAR

WEEK 04 AVERAGE DAILY NUMBER OF GASEOUS EMISSIONS = 17.7 = 0.90 TABLETS
POPULARITY VARIABLE = 7.90 = 7 DROPS OF VINEGAR

THE EFFERVESCENT VITAMIN C TABLET AND WATER/VINEGAR ARE PLACED TOGETHER INTO A FILM CAPSULE. THE CAPSULE IS THEN CLOSED TIGHTLY AND TURNED UPSIDE DOWN. SOON PRESSURE BUILDS UP INSIDE THE CAPSULE FROM THE CO² RELEASED. EVENTUALLY THE CAPSULE EXPLODES AND FLIES INTO THE AIR. THE GREATER THE AMOUNT OF EFFERVESCENT VITAMIN C AND THE GREATER THE ACIDITY OF THE WATER THE QUICKER THE REACTION HAPPENS.
